This isn’t just any park; it’s a place where the dramatic Sacramento Mountains meet the Chihuahuan Desert, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready for an adventure that’s anything but ordinary.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Step back in time at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. The park is named after Oliver Milton Lee, a colorful and influential figure in New Mexico’s past. In 1893, he settled at the mouth of Dog Canyon and built a ranch house that grew into a sprawling operation covering about one million acres at its peak.

Lee was instrumental in bringing the railroad to Alamogordo and establishing the town itself, showing just how much one person can shape a landscape. His meticulously rebuilt home at Dog Canyon Ranch is furnished to reflect his life there, offering visitors a window into a bygone era.

While the house is currently closed for renovations, keep an eye on the park’s event page for updates on when tours will resume. The park itself was established in 1980, with full ownership of the Dog Canyon Ranch parcel transferred to the state in 1998.

Nature’s Oasis in the Desert

Despite its desert setting, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is a vibrant ecosystem. Dog Canyon, where the park is located, has year-round springs that have attracted people for thousands of years. These springs create a surprising oasis with pools of water under cottonwood trees and ferns clinging to mossy rocks. You can take a short walk on the Riparian Nature Trail to explore this unique watery haven or challenge yourself with the Dog Canyon Trail.

This trail climbs significantly, offering stunning views of the Tularosa Basin and the Organ Mountains. Be prepared, as parts of this trail can be quite demanding, rising 3,100 feet in 5.5 miles. If you’re up for it, you’ll be walking on paths believed to have been used by Mogollon Indians centuries ago.

Activities for Every Explorer

Whether you’re a seasoned outdoors enthusiast or simply looking for a relaxing day out, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park has something for you. The park offers quiet camping in the Chihuahuan Desert, with sites providing privacy and incredible views across the Tularosa Basin. You’ll find amenities like showers, group shelters, electrical hookups, restrooms, and dump stations.

For history buffs, beyond the Oliver Lee ranch house, there are also the ruins of Francois-Jean “Frenchy” Rochas’s 1880s-1890s stone cabin near the water pools. Many small trails with storyboards provide a wealth of information about the area’s history and natural features.
