If someone sells you an airline ticket for a flight in or out of Alamogordo, it is a scam. The City of Alamogordo warns that the Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport has no scheduled commercial passenger service, but people posing as travel agents have been selling convincing tickets for flights that do not exist. One traveler recently showed up at the airport with one.

With holiday travel coming up, I wanted to pass this along to everyone, especially military families booking trips home.

What did the City of Alamogordo warn about?

In a public service announcement from the Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport, the city said scammers are advertising and selling tickets for nonexistent commercial flights from smaller general aviation airports. Some create itineraries showing direct flights from Alamogordo to major airline hubs.

The city said one person arrived at the airport recently with tickets that looked legitimate, bought through someone claiming to be a travel agent. The flight did not exist, and airport staff had to tell the traveler the sale was a fraud. The city also shared the warning on its Facebook page.

Are there any commercial flights from Alamogordo?

No. The city says plainly that the Alamogordo airport does not currently offer scheduled commercial passenger service, and that anyone selling tickets for scheduled flights there should be considered suspicious.

There is a push to bring air service here someday, which I covered in the effort to bring commercial flights to Alamogordo, but no airline or start date has been announced.

How can I spot a fake flight ticket?

    Red flagWhat to do instead
A ticket or itinerary showing a flight from AlamogordoKnow that no scheduled passenger flights leave Alamogordo right now
A "travel agent" who contacted you first or only takes payment by app, gift card or wireBook directly with the airline or a travel company you already know
A deal that seems far too cheapCompare the price on the airline's own website
A confirmation you cannot find on the airline's siteCall the airline directly and verify the flight before you pay

The city's advice is simple. Verify every flight, travel agent and offer directly with the airline before you give anyone payment or personal information.

Where do people in Alamogordo actually fly from?

Most of us drive to a larger airport with airline service. El Paso International Airport is the closest big one, and some people fly out of the Albuquerque International Sunport instead. Check each airport's own website for airlines and flight information.

If you are booking a holiday trip, build in time for the drive and for mountain or desert weather on the way.

What should I do if I think I was scammed?

Contact your bank or card company right away to dispute the charge. You can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Questions about the airport itself can go to Airport Manager Troy Orr at (575) 439-4110, the contact listed on the city's announcement.

What does this mean for people moving to Alamogordo?

If you are PCSing to Holloman or relocating here, plan your trips around El Paso or Albuquerque for now, and be wary of anyone who offers a shortcut. When family wants to visit, help them book directly with the airline.

Alamogordo's own airport is still worth a visit. The free airport open house on November 7 is a fun outing, and my Holloman AFB relocation guide covers more about getting settled.
