White Sands Lake Lucero Tour: November 21 Tickets and Tips
Published 18 October 2026

White Sands National Park's ranger-led Lake Lucero tour returns on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 10 a.m. It is the only way most of us ever get to see the dry lake bed known as the birthplace of the dunes. Tickets go on sale one month ahead through Recreation.gov, so for the November 21 tour that means Wednesday, October 21, and spots are limited to 50 people.
This is one of my favorite “only in Alamogordo” outings, and it books up, so here is everything you need to plan.
What is the Lake Lucero tour?
Lake Lucero is a dry lake bed on the west side of the dunefield. Rangers lead a walk down a gully to the lake bed, past thousands of selenite crystals that the park says can range from very small to two feet long. Those crystals are a key part of how the white gypsum sand forms.
The lake only holds water after plenty of rain or snow, so most visits find a dry, crusty lake bed. The National Park Service Lake Lucero Tour page has the full details.
When are the 2026 and 2027 tour dates?
The park offers the tour once a month, November through March. All tours start at 10 a.m., and check-in begins 30 minutes earlier.
| Tour date | Start time | Tickets go on sale |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday, November 21, 2026 | 10 a.m. | Wednesday, October 21, 2026 |
| Saturday, December 19, 2026 | 10 a.m. | Thursday, November 19, 2026 |
| Saturday, January 9, 2027 | 10 a.m. | Wednesday, December 9, 2026 |
| Saturday, February 13, 2027 | 10 a.m. | Wednesday, January 13, 2027 |
| Saturday, March 13, 2027 | 10 a.m. | Saturday, February 13, 2027 |
The park notes the schedule can change and tours can be canceled, so check before you go.
How do I get tickets and what does it cost?
Tickets are sold only through Recreation.gov's Lake Lucero tour page or by calling 1-877-444-6777. The program fee is $8 per person ages 16 and older and $4 for kids 15 and younger.
A few rules worth knowing:
- Only one vehicle per ticket, because parking is limited.
- Federal passes like America the Beautiful cover entrance fees but not this program fee.
- There is no park entrance fee for the Lake Lucero tour itself, but you pay it if you also drive Dunes Drive.
- Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a refund through Recreation.gov.
Where does the tour start?
Not at the visitor center. You meet at the Small Missile Range Gate on Highway 70 West, between mile markers 174 and 175, about 25 miles southwest of the park.
From the gate, you follow the ranger in your own car for 17.5 miles each way across White Sands Missile Range land. The caravan leaves right on time, so if you arrive late you cannot join. The park says to bring enough gas and a spare tire, since there are no services and cell reception is poor.
What should I bring and know before I go?
The tour lasts about three hours, and the hike is 1.5 miles round trip over rough, uneven ground rated moderate. Wear closed-toe shoes, long sleeves and long pants, and bring snacks, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.
The park strongly recommends a gallon of water per person and says rangers will not have extra. Photos are not allowed on missile range property until the ranger says it is OK at the trailhead, and concealed carry is not allowed on the tour. The park does not recommend the tour for young children, and it is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. Leashed pets are allowed.
Why does this matter if you live here or are moving here?
Living in Alamogordo means places like this are a short drive away, not a once in a lifetime trip. Lots of locals have never been to Lake Lucero, which makes it a great outing for newcomers, visiting family or anyone who wants to see the park in a new way.
