Alamogordo Public Schools is giving away free coats to children ages 3 to 18 on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old ADS Gym, 1200 N. Florida Ave., across from Stepping Stones Pre-K. The giveaway is hosted by the district's HOPE Team, just in time for the first cold mornings at the bus stop.

Our mornings have turned crisp, and kids grow out of last year's coat fast. This is a simple, kind way our schools are looking out for families, so I wanted to make sure everyone sees it.

What else is APS collecting for families this month?

The district's family support center, The HUB, is running a Holiday Toiletry Drive from November 1 to 30, 2026. According to the newsletter, donations go to displaced students in need through the holiday season and all year long.

    Items they need:

    • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
    • Floss
    • Deodorant
    • Shampoo and body wash
    • Hand soap and lotion
    • Lip balm
    • Feminine hygiene products

You can drop donations at any APS school, the APS Administration Building at 1211 Hawaii Ave., or The HUB at 805 12th Street, across from the post office. For questions, the flyer lists Monica Steeby, the district's Family Engagement Coordinator, at (575) 430-8177.

Are there other free help options for families in November?

Yes. The same APS newsletter lists a Roadrunner Mobile Food Pantry for APS families and staff on the first Wednesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. in the Riner Steinhoff Soccer Complex parking lot, with one box per household and a photo ID required for each household. The next one after this week is Wednesday, December 2.

For Thanksgiving food boxes, free community meals and pantries around town, see my Thanksgiving Meal Help page, which I keep updating through Thanksgiving Day. If you would rather give than receive this season, my post on volunteering in Alamogordo has more ideas.

    How can neighbors help?

If you have gently used coats your kids have outgrown, ask the HOPE Team whether they are still accepting donations for this giveaway or future ones. The toiletry drive is the easiest way to help right now, since you can drop items at any school during the school day.

What does this mean for families moving to Alamogordo?

If you are new to town, especially with the military, it helps to know our school district runs real support programs for families, from coat giveaways to a food pantry and a family support center at The HUB. My Moving to Alamogordo page has more on schools and settling in.
