The Alamogordo Public Library shows a Kanopy Movie Matinee almost every Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Southwest Room at 920 Oregon Ave. The next ones are Te Ata on November 5, The Bridge Master's Daughter on November 12 and The Dam Busters on November 19, and the series keeps going every Thursday in December, including Scrooge on Christmas Eve. The city's calendar lists no sign-up or cost.

It is one of my favorite low-key outings in town: a good film, a comfortable room and a library full of books to browse on your way out.

What movies are showing at the library this fall?

Here is the full schedule from the City of Alamogordo calendar. Every showing starts at 11 a.m. in the Southwest Room.

What are the November films about?

Te Ata (November 5) tells the true story of Mary Thompson Fisher, a Chickasaw storyteller raised in Indian Territory whose stage career took her to audiences around the world.

The Bridge Master's Daughter (November 12) follows a farmer in the Andean highlands of Peru who cares for the last woven footbridge left from the Incan empire, a job passed down in his family for 300 years.

The Dam Busters (November 19) is the classic 1955 British World War II film about the bombing raid on the Ruhr dams. The library's listing points out that its final attack scene inspired the attack on the Death Star in the first Star Wars film, which makes it a fun pick for film buffs and aviation fans alike.

    What is showing in December?

The December films are tied to dates on the calendar. Becoming Helen Keller plays on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny, from American Masters, plays December 10 during Universal Human Rights Month. Miss Austen Regrets follows Jane Austen's December 16 birthday.

On Christmas Eve, the library is showing Scrooge, the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol starring Alastair Sim. On New Year's Eve it is Putin and the Presidents, marking the date Vladimir Putin became president of Russia on December 31, 1999.

What else is happening at the library?

If you have little ones, Story Time runs Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30, so you could pair a Thursday matinee with Story Time for the kids. My post on free story time and kids programs at the library has the details. Kids who love building can also try Builder's Club on Saturday, November 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., where the library supplies the Legos and Duplos.

What does this mean for newcomers?

When you are new in town, the library is one of the easiest places to start feeling at home. A weekly matinee gives you a reason to get out, a familiar crowd to see again, and something to talk about. My guide to free clubs and meetups in Alamogordo has more ideas, and my November events roundup covers the rest of the month.
