Daylight Saving Time Ends Nov. 1: Alamogordo Guide

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, so clocks in Alamogordo fall back one hour to 1 a.m. You get an extra hour of sleep Saturday night, and the sun will set about an hour earlier, at about 5:13 p.m. on November 1 instead of about 6:14 p.m. on Halloween. Here is what changes around town and a quick checklist for your home.

When does daylight saving time end in New Mexico?

In the United States, daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on the first Sunday in November, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In 2026 that is Sunday, November 1. Clocks go back to 1 a.m., so that day has 25 hours.

Phones and computers change on their own. Daylight saving time starts again on Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks spring forward.

How will sunrise and sunset change in Alamogordo?

Here are the predicted times for Alamogordo from sunrise-sunset.org, rounded to the minute.

Mornings will be brighter for school drop off and the commute to Holloman, and evenings will get dark before many of us are home from work.

Will Alamogordo be on the same time as Arizona?

Yes, for the winter. Most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, so once New Mexico falls back on November 1, Alamogordo and Phoenix will show the same time until March 14, 2027. El Paso and Las Cruces change their clocks the same night we do, so nothing changes there.

That is handy to know if you have family in Arizona or a flight out of Phoenix.

What should you do around the house when you fall back?

A time change is a good built in reminder for a few easy chores.

• Reset clocks that do not update themselves, like the oven, microwave, car and older thermostats.
• Check outdoor light timers and sprinkler timers so they match the new time.
• Test your smoke alarms. My Fire Prevention Week post has more home safety tips.
• Swap in brighter porch and walkway bulbs, since it will be dark when you get home.

None of this takes long, and it means one less thing to think about once the evenings get short.

What does the early dark mean for fun around town?

Earlier sunsets mean earlier stargazing, and our dark desert skies are one of the perks of living here. My post on the Orionid meteor shower has tips on where to look up.

If you like sunset walks at White Sands, plan to arrive earlier. The park closes 30 minutes after local sunset, so on November 11 it closes at about 5:27 p.m.

What does this mean if you are moving to Alamogordo?

If you are PCSing to Holloman or moving here this winter, expect sunny, short days and early evenings from November through February. When you look at homes, it is worth driving by after dark to see the street lighting and how the neighborhood feels in the evening. My neighborhoods guide can help you pick where to start.
