Right now is the best time of year to visit Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, just south of Alamogordo. New Mexico residents pay no day-use fee at state parks from October 1 through April 30, and October through April is the park's peak season. You can picnic under the mountains, walk to the spring-fed pools of Dog Canyon, or, if you are an experienced hiker, take on one of the toughest climbs in the area.

It is one of my favorite easy outings when friends visit, and it is only about 12 miles from town.

Is Oliver Lee State Park free right now?

For New Mexico residents, yes. New Mexico State Parks' fees page says residents are exempt from day-use fees from October 1 through April 30. Here is how the day-use fees break down.

    VisitorDay-use feeWhen
New Mexico residentFreeOctober 1 to April 30
New Mexico resident$5 per vehicleMay 1 to September 30
    Non-resident$10 per vehicleYear round
    Walk-in or bicycleNo chargeYear round

Camping fees still apply all year. One thing to know if you have a federal pass: the state says national and federal discount passes, including the America the Beautiful pass, are not accepted at New Mexico State Parks.

Where is Oliver Lee State Park?

The park is at 409 Dog Canyon Rd., about 8 miles south of Alamogordo on U.S. 54 and 4 miles east on Dog Canyon Road, according to the park's official page. It sits at about 4,400 feet at the foot of the Sacramento Mountains, where Dog Canyon opens into the Tularosa Basin.

The park is also the closest campground to White Sands National Park, about 30 minutes away, so it makes a great base if you have family in town.

What is there to do at Oliver Lee?

The park describes springs that flow year round in Dog Canyon, with pools of water under cottonwood trees and ferns clinging to mossy rocks. It is a surprising, green little spot in the middle of the desert.

    • Explore Dog Canyon. The springs and cottonwoods of Dog Canyon are the park's signature sight, and the park also lists interpretive trails.
    • Picnic. There are picnic areas, a group picnic shelter and a visitor center with exhibits.
    • Watch for wildlife and birds. Birding and wildlife viewing are listed among the park's activities.
    • Camp. The campground has water and electric sites, developed dry sites, restrooms and showers, with big views across the basin.

A bit of local history: the park's namesake, Oliver Lee, settled at the mouth of Dog Canyon in 1893. The state says he was instrumental in establishing the town of Alamogordo and helped bring the railroad here. His ranch house was rebuilt from ruins and furnished as it would have been, but it is closed for renovations right now, so watch the park's events page for when tours start again.

How hard is the Dog Canyon Trail?

The full Dog Canyon Trail is serious. According to its National Recreation Trail listing, Trail #106 is 5.5 miles long one way, starts at Oliver Lee State Park and ends at Forest Road 90B in the Lincoln National Forest, and it is a trail for the experienced hiker.

    Dog Canyon TrailDetails
    Length5.5 miles one way
    Low point4,420 feet
    High point7,544 feet
    Total climbAbout 3,130 feet
    Open toHikers and horseback riders

You do not have to go to the top. You can hike as far as you are comfortable and turn around, and you still get views back over the basin. Start early, bring more water than you think you need, wear sturdy shoes and tell someone your plan.

    Is anything closed right now?

A little. The park says it remains open during entrance construction, which is expected to last through December 2026. The group area and the dump station are closed during the work, and you may see some delays near the entrance. Regular camping is still open.

Why does this matter if you live here or are moving here?

This is what living in Alamogordo looks like on a regular weekend. A mountain canyon with year round springs is about 12 miles from town, and from now through April, residents can visit for free. If you are new and still getting your bearings, my moving to Alamogordo guide covers the basics, and my post on White Sands free entry days has another great outing nearby.
