Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, 2026, and any change you make takes effect January 1, 2027. If you live in Alamogordo or anywhere in Otero County, you can get free, unbiased one-on-one help comparing plans from New Mexico's State Health Insurance Assistance Program by calling 800-432-2080. This year it matters more than usual, because some Medicare Advantage plans in New Mexico are ending.

I am not an insurance expert, but a lot of my clients are retirees and military retirees, and I want you to know where the free help is before the deadline sneaks up.

Why are some New Mexico seniors losing their plans?

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported on 14 October 2026 that Presbyterian Health Plan will discontinue four of its five Medicare Advantage plans, affecting about 30,000 patients, and that Christus Health Plan will discontinue its Medicare Advantage plans in New Mexico and Texas effective December 31. Presbyterian first announced in June that it would drop most of its Medicare Advantage plans in 2027 while keeping its Dual Plus Special Needs Plan for people eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

The paper also reported that a broker expects Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico to pull most of its Medicare Advantage plans. If you are in any of these plans, read the letters your insurer sends this fall and compare options before December 7.

Where can I get free Medicare help in Otero County?

New Mexico's Aging and Long-Term Services Department runs the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, through its Aging and Disability Resource Center. According to the Aging and Long-Term Services Department, you can reserve an appointment with a SHIP counselor online or by calling 1-800-432-2080, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain time.

SHIP help is free and unbiased, and SHIP does not endorse specific plans. Counselors can help you compare Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans, review changes to your coverage, check whether you qualify for programs that help pay Medicare costs, and enroll in a new plan if you need one.

What should I check before December 7?

A few simple questions go a long way:

    • Is my plan still offered in 2027, and did its premium, copays or drug list change?
    • Are my doctors and pharmacy still in network?
    • Are all of my prescriptions covered, and at what cost?
    • If my Medicare Advantage plan is ending, do I want another Advantage plan or Original Medicare with a separate drug plan?

You can compare plans yourself with the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE.

What does this mean for retirees moving to Alamogordo?

If you are retiring here or moving to be near family, check that your Medicare plan works with providers in Otero County before you move. According to Medicare.gov, moving to an address outside your plan's service area opens a Special Enrollment Period that lasts for 2 full months after you move.
