Holloman Air Force Gaming is the base's branch of Air Force Gaming, the official gaming program for the Air Force and Space Force, and it brings airmen together over video games, board games and tabletop games. You can meet the group in person on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at the Nerdy Charity Fundraiser at the Otero County Fairgrounds, where toys collected go to local foster kids.

I met Matthew Thomas, one of Holloman's Air Force Gaming base ambassadors, at the Alamogordo airport open house on November 7, standing in front of a backdrop of cartoon pilots and astronauts.

What is Holloman Air Force Gaming?

Air Force Gaming is the official gaming program for the Air Force and Space Force. Matthew, who is a civilian, explained that base ambassadors are volunteers who act as the go between for the Air Force wide gaming program and each base. Their job is to coordinate events and keep the community connected and having a good time.

And it covers everything. "We do anything," Matthew said: video games like Call of Duty, Battlefield and racing games, plus tabletop games such as Warhammer, BattleTech and Dungeons and Dragons, and board games in general.

Why does gaming matter for airmen?

This was the part that stuck with me. Matthew told me a lot of airmen love games but do not play with each other, or do not know that other airmen play the same games they do. Air Force Gaming creates a central space where they can meet, connect and then play together.

The group holds game nights built around whatever people want to play, such as a night of Helldivers 2 or a Call of Duty night, and it is starting monthly Magic: The Gathering tournaments. There is a competitive side too: a strong Holloman team can take on a team from Cannon Air Force Base, and players can apply for larger Air Force teams that may compete internationally.

Where do Holloman Air Force Gaming events happen?

Most events are on base at the Holloman Community Center, Building 325, which has two lounges set up for video gaming and board gaming, and the ballroom for larger tournaments. The 49th Force Support Squadron's gaming page calls the video game lounge the Control Room.

What does this mean for families living in or moving to Alamogordo?

When people ask me what there is to do here, events like this are my answer. It is free fun for the whole family, it helps local foster kids have a better Christmas, and it is a chance to meet neighbors and airmen who share your hobbies.
