Vets and Groomers in Alamogordo: A Pet Owner's Guide

If you just moved to Alamogordo with a dog or cat, the first two things to line up are a regular vet and a groomer. Alamogordo has several veterinary clinics, Holloman Air Force Base has its own vet for military family pets, and a new groomer is taking clients now. Here is my starter list, with phone numbers, so you can make that first call before you need it.

After hours or emergency? Call your regular vet first, because many clinics give after hours instructions on their phone line. The Holloman base vet says most emergencies are best handled at a full service civilian animal hospital. If you think your pet ate something poisonous, ASPCA Animal Poison Control answers 24 hours a day at (888) 426-4435, and a consultation fee may apply. Ask your vet now which after hours clinic they send patients to, and save that number in your phone.

Where can I find a vet in Alamogordo?

These are the clinics I found with an Alamogordo address and a working phone listing. Hours change, so call before you go, and ask whether they are taking new patients.

Nobody paid to be on this list, and I didn't include online reviews or rankings, because the right vet is the one that fits your pet and your schedule. The one personal recommendation below comes from my own family's experience.

Which vet do I take my own dogs to?

My own dogs go to Leslie Animal Clinic on Indian Wells Road, and I recommend them to friends all the time. They have always been kind and gentle with our animals and understanding with us. They take the time to explain what they are doing in plain, everyday terms, so you never leave confused about your pet's care. Even my husband raves about them, and trust me, he is not an easy man to impress.

Leslie Animal Clinic sees dogs and cats and is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (575) 437-4190 or visit leslieanimal.com to set up a first visit.

Does Holloman Air Force Base have a vet?

Yes. The Holloman AFB Veterinary Treatment Facility is staffed by the Army Veterinary Corps. Its main job is complete care for government owned animals, and it also offers many routine services for military family pets.

A few things to know if you are PCSing in:

    • It is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Building 22 on Yucca Avenue, across from the main clinic. The phone is (575) 572-3303.
    • All pets living on base must be registered with the vet clinic when you arrive.
    • On base housing may limit the number and breeds of pets, so check with base housing before you move.
    • Because staff is limited, the clinic says most emergencies are best served by a full service civilian animal hospital, so line up an off base vet too.

My first week in Alamogordo guide and my on base vs off base housing guide cover more of the move.

Is your pet business missing? If you groom, board or pet sit in Alamogordo and have a public storefront or business page, send me your details and I will add you.

What should I do when I move here with a pet?

A little paperwork before the moving truck saves a lot of stress later.

    1. Ask your current vet for a full copy of your pet's records, including the rabies certificate and microchip number.
    2. Call a new vet here before you arrive and ask if they take new patients.
    3. Update your pet's microchip with your new address and phone number.
    4. Check the city's pet license and rabies rules. My guide to animal rescue in Alamogordo explains the license and where to get a free microchip.
    5. If you will live on Holloman, register your pet with the base vet clinic.

When you meet a new vet, it helps to ask how they handle after hours calls, which emergency hospital they refer to, and whether they see exotic pets if you have a bird, reptile or rabbit.

What does this mean for people moving to Alamogordo?

Pets are family, and I always ask my buyers about theirs. A fenced yard, a nearby walking path, and HOA or rental pet rules can make or break a home for a dog owner. If you are house hunting with pets, tell me early and I will keep those things on the list. Cat lovers can also check out Desert Paws Cat Cafe downtown.
