The Alamogordo High School Tigers won their first home playoff game in a decade on Friday night, beating the Chaparral Lobos 54 to 0 at Tiger Stadium, according to the final score posted on MaxPreps. The win sends the No. 5 seed Tigers to the Class 5A state quarterfinals at No. 4 Los Lunas on Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m. It was a big night for the whole town, and I could not be prouder of these young men.

Why was this playoff game such a big deal?

Alamogordo Public Schools called it a historic game. It was the first time in ten years the Tigers hosted a postseason football game, and only the fourth home playoff game for the program in the last 40 years, according to Alamogordo Public Schools.

The district invited everyone to show up. There was a free community pep rally at Tiger Stadium on Thursday night with team introductions, a cheer performance and a meet and greet for kids. Students had a free tailgate party in the stadium parking lot before kickoff, and fans were asked to wear gold.

Athletic Director Alan Edmondson summed up the spirit of the week in his message to the community: "Wear your GOLD, bring your energy, be LOUD."

Who do the Tigers play next?

The Tigers travel to Los Lunas to face the No. 4 seed Los Lunas Tigers in the Class 5A quarterfinals on Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m. Los Lunas earned a first-round bye and is hosting the winner of Friday's Alamogordo and Chaparral game, according to the Valencia County News-Bulletin.

How do I get tickets for playoff games?

New Mexico Activities Association playoff games are sold as digital tickets through GoFan, the NMAA's official ticketing partner. For Friday's home game, APS said regular-season passes, district work IDs and student IDs were not accepted, every fan needed a ticket bought online, and seating was general admission.

APS also listed these playoff stadium rules: no outside food or drink, no large bags or backpacks, and no personal livestreaming of NMAA postseason games. Rules at Los Lunas are set by the host school and the NMAA, so check the game's GoFan page before you drive up.

What does a win like this mean for Alamogordo?

Friday night lights are one of the ways a small town comes together. Neighbors in gold, students, families and alumni all cheering for the same kids. That sense of community is a big part of what people love about living here, and it is something I hear about from families who are thinking about moving to Alamogordo.

If you are new in town, a playoff run is a great way to feel at home fast. You can read more good news from our schools in my Alamogordo schools good news roundup, and Tiger pride was already running high this fall after the Alamogordo High golf team's win in Clovis.

What does this mean for families moving here?

School spirit is one of the first things newcomers notice. If you are relocating, whether for Holloman Air Force Base or for work in town, community events like these are an easy way to meet other families. My moving to Alamogordo guide is a good place to start.
