Space Museum Alamogordo: Hours, Prices and Discounts
Published 1 November 2026

The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo is open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It's closed every Tuesday. Museum admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, military and New Mexico residents, and $6 for kids 4 to 12, and kids 3 and under get in free.
It's the gold building in the foothills above town, and it's one of the first places I send visitors and new neighbors. Here's what to know before you go, including a few discounts a lot of locals don't know about.
What are the Space Museum's hours?
According to the museum's website, the museum and the New Horizons Dome Theater keep the same hours.

The museum is also closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Heads up for this season: the museum says its fifth floor is temporarily closed for renovations, while its other galleries and exhibits stay open during regular hours.

Are there free days or discounts at the Space Museum?
Yes, several:
- New Mexico resident seniors (60 and up) get into the museum free on Wednesdays, except holidays and special exhibits. Theater entry isn't included.
- Foster families get free admission with proof of eligibility, which the museum says includes ID, proof of New Mexico residency and proof of foster parent or foster child status.
- Military and New Mexico residents pay the discounted rate shown in the table above.
- Museum members get free museum admission all year and free planetarium and live star shows, with $7 films and combos.
If you live here and visit often, a membership is worth a look.
Any tips for planning a visit?
The museum suggests calling (575) 437-2840 the day before you go if you want to see a theater show, since school and tour groups sometimes book an entire showing. The museum's address is 3198 State Route 2001. If you're driving through town on Highway 54/70, turn toward the mountains on Indian Wells Road, drive to the end, turn left on Scenic Drive, and the entrance is on your right.
The museum's Science Saturday series is on a break for the holidays and returns January 30. There's still plenty going on this month, including a free public star party on November 14 and the Skylab 4 Launch Pad Lecture on November 6.
Why does the Space Museum matter to Alamogordo?
The museum is home to the International Space Hall of Fame, and its website calls the area the cradle of America's space program. My post on the Space Hall of Fame turning 50 has more of that history.
What does this mean if you live here or are moving here?
Having a museum like this in town is a real perk. It's an easy rainy day or hot day outing for kids, a go-to stop when family visits, and a fun way for new residents to learn the area's history. If you're new to town, my Moving to Alamogordo guide covers more of what makes this place special.
