What is the Fire Station 2 vote about?
Fire Station 2 is being improved under a contract with National Construction. According to the agenda packet, the commission first looked at this change order on August 25, 2026, tabled it, and asked staff for cost estimates on asphalt versus concrete driveways.
Both options include a few smaller items found during construction: a shower pan that was missing from the plans, window tint for the living quarters, two exterior lights on the south patio, and a concrete pad in front of the apparatus bay so crews can wash and maintain trucks in any weather. The difference is the driveways north and south of the station.
| Option | Driveways | Change order | New contract total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt (recommended by staff) | 3 inches of asphalt over 6 inches of base | $173,159.84 | $1,564,084.31 |
| Concrete | 6 inches of concrete over 9 inches of base | $254,816.81 | $1,645,741.28 |
The original contract was $1,229,378.00, and earlier change orders brought it to $1,390,924.47. With the recommended asphalt option, the total would be $334,706.31 above the original contract, about 27% more. City engineers say properly built asphalt can reasonably handle fire truck traffic on the driveways, which saves $81,656.97 compared with concrete. Either option adds 35 calendar days to the project. Amounts exclude gross receipts tax.
What is in the budget update?
On the consent agenda, Resolution 2026-37 asks the state Department of Finance and Administration to approve revised budget numbers for the 2026 to 2027 fiscal year. The packet shows estimated revenues going up by $1,058,240 and expenditures by $2,014,664.
A few line items caught my eye:
- $550,000 and $120,000 in capital outlay money
- A $325,000 grant plus $81,500 transferred in for a project listed as MAAP Grant
- $9,875 from Lodgers' Tax for city Christmas events
- A $3,500 police Christmas donation and a $4,000 donation for the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission
Consent items are usually approved together in one vote unless a commissioner pulls one out for discussion.
What else is on the agenda?
Mayor Sharon McDonald will present an Extra Mile Day proclamation recognizing residents for their commitment to the community. The commission will also approve minutes and then go into a closed session on pending litigation and a limited personnel matter, which state law allows to be discussed privately.
What does this mean for homeowners?
Fire stations matter to every homeowner. Well built stations help keep emergency response strong, and fire protection is part of what insurance companies look at when they price a policy. How the city stretches its construction dollars also affects what is left for streets, parks and other projects.
If you want to weigh in on the bigger picture, the city's long range plan is still taking input, which I explained in my Let's Grow Alamo comprehensive plan post. My neighborhoods guide can help if you are deciding where in town to buy.
