Otero Arts has a full lineup at its ArtSpace on Indiana Avenue this November. Highlights include a Members' Exhibition opening on First Friday, November 6, from 5 to 7 p.m., and free holiday bead and card workshops for kids and adults on Saturday, November 14. It also starts the season with an art documentary on Friday, October 30, at 5:30 p.m.
Otero Arts is a great place to point newcomers. It is welcoming, it is right downtown, and so much of what it offers is free.

Are the Otero Arts workshops really free?
Yes. According to the Otero Arts classes page, Otero Arts offers free art classes for all ages, paid for by grants, with all materials included. Kids classes, generally for ages 8 and up, run from 10 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of the month, and the adult session for ages 16 and up runs from 1 to 3 p.m.
November's theme is holiday beads and cards, which makes it a fun way to start on handmade gifts. Sign up through the Otero Arts website, email oteroartsinc@gmail.com, or call 575-446-3880 and leave a message. If you cannot make it, Otero Arts asks you to let them know by 9 a.m. on workshop day.
What is the First Friday Members' Exhibition?
Every month Otero Arts opens a new exhibit with a First Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. On November 6 the walls belong to its own members, a nice chance to see what local artists have been working on and meet them in person. In December, the First Friday show on December 4 is a Collectibles Exhibition.
What else is coming up at the ArtSpace?
On Friday, October 30, at 5:30 p.m., Otero Arts is showing the art documentary The Curious World of Hieronymus Bosch, about the Dutch painter known for his strange and wonderful scenes. On November 17 at 6 p.m., the Jornada Research Institute continues its archaeology lecture series.
Two free groups also meet at the ArtSpace. Gordo Poetry holds open readings on the first and third Sundays, and Coffee Cups and Flying Saucers meets on the third Saturday. I wrote about both in my roundup of free clubs and meetups in Alamogordo.
