PistachioLand, the McGinn family's pistachio farm at 7320 US Hwy 54/70, is one of the easiest fun outings around Alamogordo, and it is open every day of the week except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. You can take a $5 open-air farm tour at the top of each hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., sample pistachios for free, and snap a photo with the World's Largest Pistachio out front. It is also a great place to pick up local holiday gifts.

What is there to do at PistachioLand?

There is more here than a quick photo stop. According to PistachioLand's farm tour and country store page, the McGinn family operates 111 acres of pistachio trees and vineyard, and they harvest, process, package and produce their pistachio treats and wines right on the farm.

    • Farm tour: an open-air ride around the pistachio orchard and vineyard, where you learn the family's farming history and how they grow, harvest and produce pistachios and wine.
    • Country store: candies, fudge, ice cream and many pistachio flavors made on site, plus T-shirts, souvenirs, gift baskets and a kids section with toys and books.
    • Free samples: free pistachio and candy sampling, and free wine tasting with a valid ID.
    • Ice cream: farm-made pistachio ice cream and pistachio shakes from the take-out window, with benches on the front porch looking out over the trees.

How much are the farm tours, and do you need a reservation?

What is the story behind the World's Largest Pistachio?

It started as a son's tribute to his father. According to PistachioLand's World's Largest Pistachio page, owner Tim McGinn built it in 2007 to honor his father, Tom McGinn, who founded the pistachio and grape farm. Today it is a favorite photo stop for visitors and locals alike, and it is a registered trademark.

Is there a McGinn's store closer to town?

Yes. McGinn's also runs a log cabin country store at #37 Highway 82, right at the Alamogordo city limit sign, with its own giant Alamogordo landmark for photos. The farm says it carries the same farm-made pistachios, candies, wines and pistachio ice cream as the main store. That store is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Why is it a good stop for holiday gifts and visitors?

Pistachios are about as local a gift as you can give from the Tularosa Basin. The store has gift packages, stocking stuffers and gifts under $30, and it is a fun way to shop local this season. If you like supporting local shops, pair a visit with Small Business Saturday in Alamogordo. When family comes to town, it also makes a nice half day with the Toy Train Depot on the way back.

What does this mean for people moving here?

One of the things I love about living in Alamogordo is how much there is to do within a short drive, from White Sands to farm stands like this one. If you are thinking about a move, my Moving to Alamogordo guide is a good place to start.
